Unison geared for Government tender on ultra fast broadband

Date: 18 September 2009

Electricity Lines company Unison Networks has welcomed the release of cabinet papers outlining the next steps in the tender process for the Governments ultra fast fibre network.

Unison chief executive Ken Sutherland said although there was a lot of detail to be worked through Unison was looking forward to participating in the process.

He was expecting further details to be released next month and in the meantime Unison would continue work on rolling out Hawke’s Bay’s high speed fibre optic broadband rollout.

Mr Sutherland said Unison will make Taradale High School, named as one of the first schools to benefit from the Government''s $34 million boost for broadband in schools, a priority on the route.

“Unison would immediately review Stage One of its Hawke’s Bay fibre roll-out to assess the practicality of getting fibre past Taradale High School,” Mr Sutherland said.

Unison as part of the New Zealand Regional Fibre Group had worked to define a nationally organised framework that ensured maximum operational efficiency, combined with local solutions to meet local needs.

The Group has made to linking up schools and hospitals a key priority.

It believes the Government has made the right decision in retaining a regional structure offering New Zealand a genuine open access network.
